Aston Villa recorded a 1-0 win at Swansea City on Boxing Day.

Orjan Nyland of Aston Villa saves a penalty during the Skt Bet Championship match between Swansea City and Aston Villa at Liberty Stadium on December 26, 2018 in Swansea, Wales.

Aston Villa fans on Twitter have lauded the once heavily criticised goalkeeper Orjan Nyland after he saved a late penalty to help his side to a 1-0 win over Swansea on Boxing Day.

The 28-year-old, who joined the club in the summer from German side Ingolstadt, has come under scrutiny from supporters since his arrival because of the number of errors he has made.

However, against the Swans at the Liberty Stadium, Nyland put in a fantastic display, which included saving Wilfred Bony’s 90th-minute penalty.

The last-minute heroics from the Norweigan also mean that Villa have now secured their first clean sheet since the start of the month when they beat Tony Pulis’ Middlesbrough 3-0 at the Riverside.

At this moment in time, Villa are sitting ninth in the Championship table, three points off sixth-placed Derby County, who occupy the final playoff spot following their 3-1 defeat at Sheffield United.

Nonetheless, Villa supporters on Twitter were ecstatic for their regular shot-stopper, who has kept six clean sheets in 24 Championship encounters for his promotion-chasing side.

One fan stated that Nyland is ‘probably our best player now’, whilst others praised him for the ‘vital’ save because Dean Smith’s side have thrown away valuable points in recent weeks.

Nyland and his teammates will be looking to make it back-to-back clean sheets when they visit Preston North End in three days time.

Here are the reactions of the Villa fans on Twitter to Nyland’s performance:
