Villa were facing the potential threat of administration amid financial problems.
If Spurs had simply paid up then, when Villa were desperate, they may have got their man.

Instead, Villa found investment in late July, and monetary stresses eased.
This left the Championship side in the driving seat and with Grealish staying professional and refusing to strike or try to force a move, Tottenham didn’t manage to convince Villa to sell.

After a seriously worrying transfer window, Villa ended it on a high by keeping their local hero and star man.
