Newcastle United may swoop for Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe.

Aston Villa fans may be hoping to see Axel Tuanzebe back in claret and blue this season, but they may end up seeing him back under Steve Bruce.

Villa saw Tuanzebe star on loan from Manchester United in an 18-month stay at Villa Park, helping them win promotion last season.

Some have been keen to see Tuanzebe return to Villa Park this summer, but United have been using him during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s pre-season preparations.

Villa have now signed Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa, Kortney Hause and Bjorn Engels to strengthen their centre back options, meaning Tuanzebe may no longer even be a target for Dean Smith.

Now, the Daily Mail report that Newcastle United want to sign Tuanzebe, as new manager Bruce – the manager who signed Tuanzebe twice at Villa – wants to take him on loan.

That move would depend on United signing Harry Maguire, and in truth, it seems a little unlikely that Newcastle will sign another centre back, given that’s their strongest area.

Steve Bruce the manager of Newcastle United looks on during a pre-season friendly match between Preston North End and Newcastle United at Deepdale on July 27, 2019 in Preston, England.

Still, Villa fans have been taking to Twitter to react, telling Tuanzebe not to join the Magpies, seemingly holding out some kind of hope that he’ll return to Villa Park, or merely ruing that he couldn’t return earlier this summer.

Others have been making jokes about Bruce, suggesting that he’ll only play centre back Tuanzebe at right back, as he often did at Villa, telling the defender to avoid such a situation again.
