After relegating Newcastle United in 2010, Aston Villa fans feel the two clubs are now even.
Newcastle celebrate winning the league with the trophy
Aston Villa and Newcastle were both miserably relegated from the Premier League last season, but only one is bouncing back.
Villa had a hand in Newcastle’s demise, holding them to a late draw in the 2015/16 season, but it was nothing on the way they relegated the Toon in 2009/10.
An infamous Damien Duff own goal saw Newcastle contribute to their own demise on that day, while Villa supporters revelled in their side’s resilience to send Alan Shearer’s side down.

In the years since and especially this season with the two teams in the Championship together, an increasingly bitter rivalry has played out, at least on social media rather than the terraces.
This season there has been only one team left smiling, with Newcastle promoted, and Villa failing to even make the play-offs.
Yesterday thanks to Jack Grealish’s winning goal against Brighton, Newcastle were crowned champions.

With the two teams separated next season for the first time in seven years, Villa fans hope that Grealish’s goal will end any hostile feelings towards them from Newcastle.
A watershed moment? Perhaps.
And Newcastle, you’re welcome, now we’re even . #AVFC
