Steve Bruce handed Rushian Hepburn-Murphy a rare start for Aston Villa on his 20th birthday last night, but it did not go according to plan.

The chance to lead the line proved too difficult for him, with Villa’s tactics failing to play to his strengths against Burton.

Hepburn-Murphy was up front on his own, and as one of the shortest players in Villa’s team it just did not work.

Part of this was not just due to the team’s formation, but the type of football they were playing.

Hepburn-Murphy’s service seemed to consist of long balls either into him or over the top which Burton’s defenders got the better of.

Villa lost the game 1-0, with supporters’ frustrations with manager Steve Bruce continuing to grow.

Hepburn-Murphy has work to do and the match was a learning experience for him. Yet there was a feeling among some fans that he never stood a chance.
