Aston Villa have announced Bjorn Engels as their eighth signing of the summer transfer window.

Aston Villa announced on Tuesday night that manager Dean Smith has further strengthened his defence with the capture of Bjorn Engels from Ligue 1 side Reims.

Sky Sports report that the central defender will cost up to £9m, taking the Villans’ summer spending close to £100m in total, with others such as Tyrone Mings and Wesley arriving in big money deals.

It’s a needed investment into the squad with their return to the Premier League from the Championship likely difficult to navigate next season.

Engels only spent one season in France, having previously played for Olympiacos and boyhood Belgian side Club Brugge, where he won three trophies.

At 6ft 4in he’ll add physicality and height to the Villa defensive line, competing for places alongside Mings, Ezri Konsa and Kortney Hause.

He has the potential to further improve, given he is still just 24, although already has some elite experience having played in the UEFA Champions League and Europa League previously.

Smith has hinted that the club’s summer business isn’t quite done yet either, so Villa fans can look forward to even more transfer market action before deadline day.
