Aston Villa have proudly talked up their support ahead of their Championship playoff semi-finals by announcing that they were responsible for eight of the ten biggest attendances across the English Football League throughout the 2018-19 season.
Despite being in their third year in the third tier and having had some bumps along the way, the Villans continue to be fervently supported, and the atmosphere is currently more positive than it has been for a while thanks to their amazing upturn in form since March.
A club record 10-match winning run culminated in Dean Smith’s charges sealing a playoff place and will get proceedings under way when they host West Midlands rivals West Bromwich Albion at Villa Park in Saturday’s semi-final first leg.
With the mood around B6 so positive, the club posted about their role in the EFL’s top attendance figures on their Twitter feed:
Reaction by the fanbase was mixed, with some celebrating the news and others thinking it should not be such a focus of pride and attention:
The EFL said on their website that attendances across their leagues have reached their highest levels in 60 years as over 18.3 million people made their way to league fixtures during the 2018/19 season, the highest figure since 1959.
