Aston Villa fans have taken to Twitter in bemusement after Gareth Southgate explained why Jack Grealish didn’t come off the bench against Denmark.
The Three Lions were put in a difficult position early on after Harry Maguire’s first-half red card, meaning the England manager had to change his game plan.
He told Sky Sports (via The Daily Mail): “We had to go with speed in the wide areas and athleticism in the wide areas because with ten you have got such a shift without the ball. Mason [Mount] and Marcus [Rashford] did that really well.”
The ex-Middlesbrough boss subbed Jadon Sancho and Dominic Calvert-Lewin on, leaving Grealish on the bench, and his explanation behind that decision has left supporters baffled.

A graphic from the BBC shows the Villa captain is actually among the fastest players in the Premier League this season, sitting joint-sixth in the table.
