According to a recent report from The Sun on Sunday (08/04; page 13), Aston Villa are eyeing a move for Jake Livermore with West Brom looking destined to be relegated to the Championship and Steve Bruce’s side fighting for promotion back to the Premier League.

The Baggies will surely be playing second tier football next season with 10 points separating them from safety. Villa meanwhile, have a decent chance of ending their top flight exile this season with a play-off place looking to be on the cards.

Should Villa get promoted, Bruce appears determined to strengthen his squad, with The Sun on Sunday reporting that a move for Livermore is at the top of his summer wishlist – and £10 million may be enough to get something done.

But based on Livermore’s form this season, it is difficult to see why the Villans would deem a move for the 28-year-old to be worthwhile as he has been one of the players in the West Brom side who has been the most underwhelming. On paper, the Baggies arguably have a squad good enough to be nowhere near the bottom three.

Villa have plenty of depth in the middle of the park, and if they go up, they should arguably have much more pressing concerns that they look to address in the transfer market.

Key first-team regulars such as Sam Johnstone, Robert Snodgrass and John Terry have uncertain futures ahead of them, while Scott Hogan is their highest-scoring striker and he boasts just six goals to his name in the Championship.

Livermore has the quality to potentially justify a £10 million move, but Bruce should surely expect a number of fans to be left scratching their heads if Villa are promoted and the manager prioritises a move for the West Brom midfielder after such a disappointing year.
