Birmingham City have taken Aston Villa prospect Ben Swift on trial, with the youngster featuring for the Blues’ under-23 side yesterday.
Swift was on the losing side as Sheffield United’s in form team won the contest 3-1 to seal progression to the next round of the Premier League Cup.
Birmingham’s website confirms Swift is on trial at the club, playing at centre-back for the fixture.
Swift, 19, is set to become a free agent at the end of the season and the fact he has been allowed to go out on trial by Villa suggests strongly that he will be released.
The defender made the bench only once for Villa’s under-23 side this season, otherwise being overlooked for selection.
Both Aston Villa and Birmingham City’s first teams are struggling this season in the Championship, winning just two games out of their last 20 league games combined – each suffering defeats this past week.
