Aston Villa were said to be chasing Marley Watkins, but the attacker is set to sign for Norwich City.

According to a report in the Eastern Daily Press, Marley Watkins is set to sign for Norwich City – in what could be a major blow for Aston Villa in the transfer market.

Watkins had interest from a range of Championship clubs, including Villa, but has reportedly opted to move to Norwich instead.

The attacking midfielder is expected to be announced at Carrow Road in the near future, leaving Villa to look elsewhere.

The problem for Villa is that their recent cut-backs, which have left Steve Bruce with just £1 million to spend (Daily Mirror), mean that they are limited with which players they can bring in.

And Watkins was surely one of the best quality players available for Villa this summer.

The 26-year-old not only has room to improve, but he has also shown his class at Championship level this season with Barnsley.

Watkins has scored 10 goals and claimed nine assists for the Tykes, and proved to be a major attacking threat.

His arrival at Villa would have increased Bruce’s options in forward areas, which will be crucial if the Villans are to earn promotion next season.

And it may be that Villa have to look on with envy at Norwich, if Watkins fulfils his potential at Carrow Road.
