Aston Villa are surely clear favourites to sign John Terry now, with Spartak Moscow and Derby County out of the running.

Terry looked set to move to Russia with Spartak, but he decided against the transfer, even after having a medical.

Frank Lampard, meanwhile, has ruled Derby out of the running for the centre-back, according to the Derby Telegraph.

It means that Villa appear to have a free run for Terry, and they must be the favourites to land him now.

Terry spent last campaign with Steve Bruce’s side, but they were unable to agree a contract with him at the start of the summer.

The 37-year-old is still without a club though, and Villa’s new owners are prepared to back Bruce with funds.

Villa now seemingly have the money available to sign Terry, and with the competition dropping out of the race, they could have a clear run to bring the centre-back to Villa Park.
