The Iceland midfielder left the Villa Park side by mutual consent on deadline day.

Aston Villa cult hero Stan Collymore has taken to Twitter to comment on the news that Birkir Bjarnason has left Villa Park by mutual consent.
The 31-year-old joined the Villans from Swiss club FC Basel in January 2017, months after helping Iceland to the quarter-finals of Euro 2016.
However, Bjarnason struggled in his first 12 months at Villa Park and even considered leaving the club at one stage (The Express), though he eventually forced his way into first-team contention in 2018, helping Villa seal a playoff place.
In the season just gone, the Icelander got a fair amount of game time early on but injuries hampered his campaign and from the end of January onwards he played just 16 minutes, according to Transfermarkt.
The Premier League new-boys confirmed on Thursday afternoon that they had parted company with Bjarnason, who leaves Villa Park having made 54 appearances in claret and blue:
Here is Collymore’s take on the midfielder’s departure, which has surprised quite a few Villa fans, judging by the Twitter reaction to the club statement:
Bjarnason has made 78 appearances for Iceland and scored 12 goals, according to Transfermarkt.
