Aston Villa have announced the signing of Caleb Chukwuemeka from Northampton Town, fighting off competition from Rangers and Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
Given younger brother Carney is already honing his considerable talents at Bodymoor Heath, Villa always appeared to be the most likely destination for a teenage forward who has been turning heads since forcing his way into Northampton’s first team last season.
“I think, technically, the lad is a very gifted footballer,” former Cobblers boss Keith Curle said after Chukwuemeka’s first-team debut last September.
The Daily Mail reported ten months ago that Aston Villa were following the 19-year-old closely.
Chukwuemeka’s official unveiling on Monday afternoon, then, represents a satisfying conclusion to a lengthy transfer saga.
Caleb Chukwuemeka joins younger brother at Aston Villa
“We are delighted Caleb has joined us. He has been a player we’ve been monitoring for a while now and he has continued to develop well at Northampton, making a number of appearances last season,” said Aston Villa academy manager Mark Harrison.
“He is an exciting attacking player with an eye for goal and we feel he has a lot of potential. We’re really looking forward to working with him.
“I would like to thank Northampton for the way they’ve handled this transfer.”

According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, Norwich City and Steven Gerrard’s Rangers had all been watching Chukwuemeka at Sixfields.
Once Aston Villa firmed up their interest, however, there was only going to be one winner.
“With his scholarship finishing in February, we made good contract offers to Caleb but, once there was Premier League interest, his agent informed us he felt they would like to pursue that option, which we understand too,” explains Northampton chairman Kelvin Thomas.
“Caleb’s situation is also unique with his brother recently signing a professional contract with Villa – so there was already a strong family connection with the club.”
