Aston Villa midfielder Jake Doyle-Hayes was selected to start for Steve Bruce against Yeovil Town.

Steve Bruce has not exactly raved about Jake Doyle-Hayes’ display in Aston Villa’s match against Yeovil Town on the club’s official website.

Doyle-Hayes was making just his second appearance for Villa’s first-team yesterday, but he didn’t have a huge influence on the contest.

Villa only picked up a 1-0 win after a below par performance against their League Two opponents.

And when Bruce was asked about the youngster’s display after the match, he wasn’t exactly signing the praises of the midfielder.

Bruce said: “He did ok given the way we didn’t dominate the game how we’d have liked.

“It was a difficult night for him in that respect – a difficult evening overall.”

Doyle-Hayes was one of a number of Villa’s youngsters to be given a chance by Bruce, who rang the changes at Yeovil.

The claret and blues looked like a team who were still learning to play alongside each other, after an insipid display.

Villa had a number of scary moments during the contest, but eventually got through when Conor Hourihane tapped in Jonathan Kodjia’s cross at the far post.
