It looks like Aston Villa boss Dean Smith is about to bench Wesley.

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith has hinted that Wesley Moraes will be dropped for tonight’s visit of Wolverhampton Wanderers by revealing that Keinan Davis will start.

Smith’s side welcome Wolves to Villa Park as a quarter-final in the Carabao Cup awaits the winner.

Aston Villa go into the clash on the back of a 3-0 defeat at Manchester City in the Premier League, with the reigning champions scoring all their goals in the second half.

Wesley, who joined the West Midlands side from Club Brugge this past summer, was particularly disappointing at Eastlands.

But Davis, who replaced the big Brazilian with 20 minutes to go, impressed during his cameo and Smith revealed that both the Bodymoor Heath product and Conor Hourihane would start tonight.

He told Aston Villa’s official website: “There are players who will need to play against Wolves because it’s a big week playing Man City, Wolves and then Liverpool. The lads like Conor who didn’t play at the weekend will play. Keinan will play. So we’ll go with a few changes that’s for sure.”

Davis playing almost certainly means that Wesley will drop out of the first XI, unless Smith plans on going with a two-pronged attack, which seems very unlikely.

The ex-Brugge star has netted four times in 10 Premier League outings this season.

Some might argue that Smith should play his best team in a game against Wolves, no matter the competition, and that involves the towering marksman, who has four goals in 10 Premier League outings.

But the truth is that big Wesley is blowing hot and cold this season and changing things up by starting Davis is definitely the smart choice.

And a big performance from the 21-year-old might boost his hopes of starting in this weekend’s visit of Liverpool in the league.
