Aston Villa manager Dean Smith has suggested to The Birmingham Mail that he wants to sign a central defender in the January transfer window.

Smith, who was recently appointed as the Villa manager following the departure of Steve Bruce, has admitted that he is short in the central defensive area.

When asked by The Birmingham Mail if any targets had been considered for January, Smith said: “It’s something we are constantly monitoring.

“At the moment we’ve got two recognised centre-backs. We certainly need to look to add to that area, that’s for sure.”

Sensible plan

Villa have James Chester and Axel Tuanzebe playing in central defence at the moment, while Mile Jedinak and Alan Hutton can also operate in that department despite being a defensive midfielder and a right-back respectively by trade.

The Villans are conceding more goals than they should at the moment, and that is a key reason why the team are lagging behind the rest of the teams aiming to challenge for the Championship playoffs this season.

The problem that Villa could face is that there will probably not too many quality central defenders available in the January transfer window who would be able to make an instant impact at Villa Park.

Villa are 17th in the Championship table at the moment with 18 points from 15 matches.
