Aston Villa failed to hold on to their lead twice against Arsenal yesterday.

Dean Smith has told Aston Villa’s official Youtube channel that his side need to continue to be more attacking after taking leads in games.

Villa failed to beat 10 man Arsenal yesterday, despite having the lead twice.

The claret and blues scored through John McGinn and Wesley to put themselves in position to pick up a shock victory at the Emirates Stadium.

However, they were undone by some poor defending, as Arsenal came back to take the three points.

It is now the second time that Villa have failed to go on and beat a side with 10 men this season.

And Smith admits that Villa need to start showing less signs of nerves when in commanding positions.

“I just said that we all need to take responsibility and if we take the lead in games try and close it out by going to get the next one, not sitting back and inviting pressure,” he said, when asked what he said at full-time.

Conor Hourihane of Aston Villa signs a new contract pictured with Dean Smith head coach at Bodymoor Heath training ground on July 10, 2019 in Birmingham, England.

“As we’ve seen today pressure invites mistakes and we’ve made mistakes.”

Villa’s start to the season has caused some concern, but the fact that they are getting into winning positions is at least cause for some encouragement.

Villa are next in action when they take on Brighton & Hove Albion in the League Cup.
