Brentford made sure Dean Smith’s return to Griffin Park wouldn’t be a successful one as his Aston Villa team was beaten 1-0 on Wednesday night.

Neal Maupay, who impressed for the Bees in the reverse Championship fixture at Villa Park with both his side’s goals in August’s 2-2 draw, once again delivered.

With time running out for Brentford to make sure their dominance was rewarded, the 22-year-old cut inside Tyrone Mings and rifled home in stoppage time to send the home contingent wild.

Villa were outplayed at Griffin Park, with only six shots – three on target – and 37.6 per cent possession compared to Brentford’s 23 shots – six on target – and 62.4 per cent possession (Sky Sports).

Victory for Brentford saw them edge up to 15th in the table, just four points behind 10th-placed Villa, who have now won just twice in their last 12 games.

Smith left Griffin Park for Villa in October and the London club initially struggled, but they are currently on the up under Thomas Frank, having lost just once in 12 games.
