Andre Green has provided Aston Villa with a big boost ahead of Friday night’s crucial Championship clash against Sheffield United by returning to training, after a hamstring problem.

Green, 20, returned to Villa in January after an impressive loan spell with League One promotion contenders Portsmouth, where he scored five goals in just 12 appearances for Pompey.

It saw Dean Smith decide to recall the impressive attacker, and he came on for the last 30 minutes of Villa’s 2-2 draw against Hull City in January. But he has been missing from the club’s last two Championship fixtures.

Prior to the 2-1 win over Ipswich Town, the England Under-20 international suffered a hamstring injury in training but will have delighted Villa fans on Instagram with his latest update – informing supporters that he has returned to training.

Green could now be in line to make the matchday squad to face Sheffield United on Friday, in what is an important fixture as Villa look to break into the top six. Villa are four points behind sixth-placed Bristol City.

Meanwhile, Sheffield United are flying high in third place and only three points behind second-placed Leeds United and top-of-the-table Norwich City – who are both on 57 points after the Canaries beat Leeds at Elland Road last time out.

In what is a crucial fixture for both sides, Green has handed Smith a boost ahead of the match though it remains to be seen if he will be included in the 18-man squad to take on Chris Wilder’s Blades.
