Aston Villa and Newcastle United will now rival interest at Leeds United in the free transfer of Borussia Dortmund star Raphael Guerreiro. The left-back is out of contract this summer.

That is according to 90min, which reports that Guerreiro is now subject to interest from all around Europe. Some of Borussia Dortmund’s rivals in Germany plus sides in England, Italy and Spain have made their admiration known with the 29-year-old available for a Bosman.

Guerreiro is one of Europe’s most complete full-backs but looks set to leave BVB when his contract expires this June. The Portugal maestro has been at the Westfalenstadion since a £9m move from Lorient in 2016. He has since made 38 goals and 45 assists in 214 outings.

Aston Villa and Newcastle join Leeds with an interest in Guerreiro’s transfer

Borussia Dortmund head coach Edin Terzic has benefitted from Guerreiro’s impact for four goals and nine assists this season. He has fielded the 61-cap international in 26 of BVB’s 35 fixtures in all competitions. The left-back also registered two assists in four World Cup ties.

Leeds have monitored Guerreiro’s situation at Borussia Dortmund in view of a transfer for the last few months. But Aston Villa, Newcastle and Wolves have now joined the Whites in pursuing a deal. Burnley may also make an audacious move should they secure promotion.

Why is the Borussia Dortmund left-back so sought after as a free agent?

Burnley are cruising toward a Championship title and an immediate return to the Premier League. But the Clarets would likely struggle to edge interest from Aston Villa, Newcastle and Leeds for Guerreiro’s transfer once his contract with Borussia Dortmund ends in June.

Newcastle could also stand the best chance at securing Guerreiro’s transfer as they could offer the Borussia Dortmund ace Champions League football next term. Boss Eddie Howe has the Toon dreaming of the UEFA competition in which Guerreiro scored twice this term.

Guerreiro, who expert Bundesliga commentator Derek Rae claims can produce ‘beautiful’ moments, has also laid on five assists and one goal in his last four Bundesliga outings. The £81k-a-week dynamo made a hat-trick of assists to help BVB claim a 5-1 win over Freiburg.
