Both Aston Villa and Leeds United are said to be chasing Adam Clayton by the Yorkshire Evening Post, but there has be questions asked over whether either of the pair need the midfielder.

Clayton could be made available by Middlesbrough, as he has struggled for game time so far this season.

However, there would be no guarantees of Clayton breaking into either Villa’s or Leeds’s starting line-up.

Adam Clayton of Middlesbrough holds off Cesc Fabregas of Chelsea during the Premier League match between Chelsea and Middlesbrough at Stamford Bridge on May 8, 2017 in London, England.

Leeds and Villa are both very well stocked in midfield, and neither appear to need strengthening in that area this month.

Leeds have Eunan O’Kane, Kalvin Phillips, Ronaldo Vieira and Mateusz Klich competing for places in midfield already, and their money would be far better off invested elsewhere.

Villa, meanwhile, already have Conor Hourihane, Mile Jedinak, Henri Lansbury and Glenn Whelan in their ranks, and that should be more than enough for Steve Bruce.

And although Clayton is a quality player at Championship level, Leeds and Villa are far better off looking to strengthen their squads in other areas.
