Fans instantly link Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc to Newey’s new project after team principal announcement.

Aston Martin’s bombshell confirmation that Adrian Newey will become team principal in 2026 has sent Formula 1 fans into overdrive. The most successful designer in F1 history has never stepped into a TP role, but with Andy Cowell shifting to chief strategy officer, Newey will now shape both the direction of the team and its long-term driver strategy.

That immediately raises questions about the futures of Fernando Alonso, who has hinted at retirement, and Lance Stroll, whose rolling contract could finally come under scrutiny. According to F1 Oversteer, Aston Martin are planning a completely new driver line-up for 2027 — and fans think they already know which two names Newey will want.

Fans believe Newey could lure Verstappen and Leclerc to Aston Martin

Social media exploded within minutes of the announcement, with supporters insisting this is a “declaration of war” that puts Aston Martin in the running for the sport’s biggest stars.

Many believe Max Verstappen — who won all four of his titles in a Newey-designed Red Bull — could be tempted if Red Bull underperform next season.

One fan wrote: “Newey as team principal… they’re really serious about getting Verstappen and Leclerc.”

Another added: “This move makes Aston Martin instantly attractive to every top driver. Newey x Honda — that’s Verstappen’s home.”

Others went even further, picturing a dream lineup: “Adrian Newey x Max Verstappen x Charles Leclerc would be Formula 1 in its purest form.”

Some also suggested that Alonso’s long-term future with the team essentially ended the moment Newey signed on, with one fan claiming: “With Newey as boss, Verstappen in 2027 is a fact.”

Newey embraces challenge as Aston Martin prepare for new era

Newey’s own reaction underscored the significance of the project. “Over the last nine months, I have seen great individual talent within our team,” he said. “I’m looking forward to taking on this additional role as we prepare for the new regulations and our first season as a full works team.”

He also highlighted the importance of Cowell’s new position as Aston Martin integrate their 2026 Honda power unit — a key factor in the team’s long-term vision.

With Verstappen’s relationship with Newey historically strong, and Leclerc increasingly frustrated at Ferrari, fans see the 2027 driver market as wide open — and Aston Martin’s new leadership as a major power shift.
