Speaking on the Blood Red Podcast, Liverpool Echo journalist Paul Gorst has claimed that Liverpool are looking at Duje Caleta-Car as an option at centre-back.

It seems as though the Reds’ hunt for a new defender has stepped up a gear this week with reports emerging that they’re close to sealing a deal for RB Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate, but it seems as though they’re also looking at other options.

The Marseille defender is one they’re certainly taking a look at.

“It is interesting because they’re keeping their options open with this five man list. You can imagine, Caleta-Car is still being assessed you know, they’d been looking at him in January, and they pretty much couldn’t get him because Marseille didn’t have time to bring in a replacement,” Gorst said.

“They’re still assessing him alongside Konate and Kabak as well, so it shows you that they do know this is an area that needs fixing and tweaking, and it looks as though they’re willing to spend to do so.”

This is certainly an interesting update.

This five-man shortlist has been spoken about in a number of outlets, and it seems as though we now know three names that are on there with Konate, Kabak and Caleta-Car.

All three of these players are very young, so it’s clear to see what Liverpool are trying to do in terms of building for the future.

It remains to be seen which centre-half the Reds opt to sign in the summer, but, as Gorst says, it seems as though they are willing to spend.
