Tim Sherwood suggested on Sky Sports News (2:20pm, January 16, 2021) that Newcastle United should look at Leeds United for inspiration.
Newcastle have not been playing good football this season, and there is a danger that they could get dragged into a relegation battle.
The Magpies’ playing style is not very popular among the fans, as it is quite negative and there is not much attacking threat.
Steve Bruce’s side have scored just 18 goals in 17 Premier League games so far this season and are just seven points above the relegation zone.
Leeds have been playing good and entertaining football, and the Whites have earned praise from neutrals.
Former Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa manager Sherwood said on Sky Sports News (2:20pm, January 16, 2021) while urging Bruce to be more attacking: “I think Leeds and Bielsa have shown the way. They are newly promoted into the Premier League, but they play on the front foot, they play one way. Yes, they take some hammerings, but they also win some games. If you ask the Leeds United fans, they have been looking from afar, if they are enjoying it, they will say absolutely yes.”
Newcastle United need to do better
There are some wonderful attacking players at Newcastle, such as Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron, and Bruce does need to play better and more attacking football.
Leeds have a unique style and Bielsa is a unique manager, and while it would not be fair to ask Bruce to simply copy the Whites, Newcastle should at least play a system in which his players are on the front foot.
