Liverpool star Georginio Wijnaldum spoke to Dutch outlet Het Parool about the situation surrounding his contract.
The 29-year-old has been at Anfield for over four years and has helped the club win the Premier League and the Champions League. Wijnaldum has less than a year left on his contract, and the speculation surrounding his future is increasing by the day.
The Daily Mail claimed a few weeks ago that the former Newcastle United man will leave Liverpool to join Barcelona; either in January for a small fee or in the summer on a free transfer.
Barca boss Ronald Koeman knows Wijanldum very well thanks to their time together with the Dutch national team. A reunion is a serious possibility, and it is down to Liverpool to either offer him a new deal or let him leave for nothing.
Wijnaldum: ‘Ask Liverpool those questions’
Wijnaldum was asked about his contract situation and the Dutchman refused to comment. He told the reporter to ask the same question to Liverpool, who seem to have not offered him a new deal yet.
He said: “I can’t say anything about that. Just ask Liverpool those questions. Don’t they answer? I cannot say anything about it, including whether or not there is talk of a new contract between me and Liverpool. Sorry.”
Despite entering the final year of his contract, Wijanldum has been used regularly. The Dutchman has featured in all but one game this season, and there have been no signs of tension between him and Jurgen Klopp.
It will be interesting to see how this develops. Wijnaldum, 29, has one big transfer left in his career. A move to Barcelona is never easy to turn down. However, if Liverpool offer him a good deal, he may well decide to extend his contract.
