Dan Ashworth – Director of Football at Newcastle – has now sealed a deal which is arguably his best work yet at St James’ Park.
What’s the story?
Well, the 51-year-old earned a reputation for being one of the best negotiators in the business during his time at Brighton, which convinced Newcastle to hire him.
Ashworth has proven his credentials with a number of impressive signings, such as swoops for Sven Botman, Alexander Isak and Nick Pope.
However, his sale of Chris Wood on a permanent basis to Nottingham Forest – which was made official today – may actually be his best business yet for the Magpies given the numbers involved.
As revealed by Fabrizio Romano, Nottingham Forest have now signed the New Zealand international in a permanent deal worth £15m after he made three appearances at the City Ground.
Wood initially joined Steve Cooper’s side on loan in January, although the appearance clause has now been triggered, meaning Newcastle recoup most of their £25m investment.
It has also been said that Nottingham Forest paid a loan fee for the man from Auckland – therefore, Newcastle may actually have received more than £15m.
For a 31-year-old who scored just five goals in 39 appearances for Newcastle, that is remarkable business.

That is no disrespect to Wood, who carried out a solid job as Newcastle battled against relegation last season – he performed his role admirably even if the goals didn’t flow, and he can leave Tyneside with his head held high.
Chris Wood deal is vital for Newcastle
Some fans may not be too bothered about this news.
However, it is a vital bit of business in regards to Financial Fair Play.
Receiving such a large chunk of money for Wood will go a long way in balancing the books at Newcastle, which should give Ashworth some more leeway when it comes to spending on reinforcements for Eddie Howe this summer.
