If Steve Bruce is to leave Newcastle in the coming weeks, the man to replace him could well be Chris Wilder, but that could cause a big headache at St James’ Park.
Indeed, Ian McGarry said on the Transfer Window Podcast that Wilder was being lined up as a potential replacement for Bruce, but an appointment like this could cause problems down the line.
Now, we’re not going to doubt that Wilder would be a fantastic appointment for Newcastle. After all, he’s a fantastic tactician, a former LMA Manager of the Year winner and in our view he’s the best English manager in the game right now.
However, the idea of Wilder working under Mike Ashley seems like a bit of a recipe for disaster.
Wilder and Ashley are both big characters on the opposite end of the spectrum to one another, and we have to wonder how the pair would work in tandem.
Wilder is fully focused on getting results on the pitch and doing what’s best for his club, while Ashley seemingly doesn’t have much ambition at Newcastle.
Wilder has had his issues with the owners at Sheffield United, with McGarry even saying on the Transfer Window Podcast:

“Chris Wilder, who departed Sheffield United after a long-running and antagonistic relationship with the club’s hierarchy over transfers and investment”
We’re sure every Newcastle fan would agree when we say there aren’t many more owners in the country more frustrating than Ashley, and one thing is for sure, Wilder wouldn’t just sit idly by if he felt the owner wasn’t doing enough for him and his team.
Wilder would undoubtedly cause Ashley a headache, and while he would bring a brilliant brand of football on the pitch, there would likely be issues in the background if the outspoken former Blades boss was to team up with the frugal and frustrating Ashley.
