Ashley Williams has told Sky Sports that Ronald Koeman was a huge part of his reason to join Everton.

The defender made the move to Goodison Park from Swansea City this summer as they looked for a replacement for John Stones, who left in a big money switch to Manchester City.

It was something of a surprise that he ended up leaving the Liberty Stadium given the big role he has played in Swansea’s rise through the divisions over the years.

Moving to Everton is seen as him taking the next step, though, and he says that manager Koeman was actually one of the bigger draws of the move.

“That’s a big reason I wanted to join the club because he [Koeman] is here,” he told Sky Sports.

“He plays my position, one of the best to ever do it, so hopefully I can learn a lot from him.”

Everton fans will certainly be hoping that Williams can learn a few tricks from Koeman over the coming season.

The Wales captain is already among the best defender’s in the Premier League and has shown that over the years with Swansea.

But if he can improve under Koeman, who has a track record of developing centre-backs in his managerial career, then his signing will look like a very smart one indeed and help the Toffees kick on to the next level both this season and for years to come.
