Will the Chelsea left-back cling onto an international future with England?
Ashley Cole’s worst enemy can be named today; himself!
In any other profession if you tweeted that your boss or bosses were #ABUNCHOFTWATS you’d be looking to take your place at the queue in the jobcentre.
But as we all know footballers live in a fantasy world where they can say what they like to who they like whenever they like.
The FA is charging him with improper conduct likely to bring the sport into disrepute while leaving it to England Manager Roy Hodgson to decide the Chelsea left back’s international future.
What’s annoying is, and this is hard to say as a QPR fan, Cole is a very good footballer with a very good football brain; it’s real life that lets him down.
His loyalty to his friend and teammate John Terry can’t be questioned; but why send a tweet and then delete after you realised it will land you in deep trouble? It was only retweeted 25,000 so it’s not like he can deny it!
Cole is on the brink of joining a very select band of English football players. He is two caps away from representing his country one hundred times.
Of course Cole would like to emulate the centurions — Peter Shilton (125), David Beckham (115), Bobby Moore (108), Bobby Charlton (106) and Billy Wright (105).
The game on Friday night is against the worst international team in the world; San Marino are ranked at 207th and last in the ranking list.
Wembley is a sell out in what’s bound to be an England win so Hodgson really won’t or shouldn’t be in great need of defenders; at least that’s the excuse he can use anyway.
At 31 Cole can still play for his Country for the next couple of years; that’s if he stays off twitter; if not it will be a shame for the international game.
Should England stick with Ashley Cole?
