Birmingham could be close to signing LA Galaxy defender Ashley Cole.

Ashley Cole has admitted that joining Birmingham City from LA Galaxy this summer is “something I’m thinking about” after manager Harry Redknapp revealed interest in the veteran.

Cole has six months left to run on his current contract with the MLS club and after learning of the Blues’ pursuit, has responded to the speculation.

“Yeah, I’m just waiting to kind of see and keep my options open,” the 36-year-old was quoted by the Birmingham Mail.

“It’s six months left here so it’s something I’m thinking about, yeah.”

Redknapp has previously said that Cole could easily play at Championship level and could add the bit of quality needed to his squad.

The 70-year-old is understood to be keen to improve on his current options at left-back of Jonathan Grounds and youngster Cheick Keita – who also operated at left midfield after joining from Virtus Entella in January.

While Cole is believed to be settled with his family in Los Angeles, the former England international is open to a move back to his home country.

Also, while the full-back was earning around £200,000-a-week at his peak at Chelsea, the Mirror reported in April that the defender is now on £5,665-a-week, so wages shouldn’t be an issue for Birmingham.
