Tim Sherwood says Patrick Bamford should be ‘ashamed’ of himself after Asmir Begovic was wrongly sent off during Leeds United’s 1-0 win over QPR at Elland Road.

In stoppage time, the on-field referee, David Webb, deemed that QPR goalkeeper Asmir Begovic took out Patrick Bamford as he tried to get the ball after being put through on goal.

As a result, the former Everton man was issued a straight red card, but as Tim Sherwood put it, he ‘didn’t even touch’ the Leeds United man, as he told Soccer Special on Sky Sports (04/10/23 at 9:40 pm).

There is no doubt that the red card will be overturned. With striker Lyndon Dykes forced to go in between the sticks once his teammate was sent off.

In the context of the game, the ardent QPR fan might say it still had an effect because their main striker had to go in goal for a few minutes.

But in truth, it was right at the death, with Crysencio Summerville’s first-half strike proving to be the difference.

Asmir Begovic’s red card v Leeds United

“I don’t think there is any (contact),” said Sherwood. “When I look at the replay. I think Patrick (Bamford) might be a little ashamed when he sees this.

“He has gone down. When you see it first, it looks like Asmir (Begovic) might have caught him with the way Patrick goes down.

“Jimmy Dunn gets done in behind. He toes it. When you look at it from a different angle. You see the gap. He doesn’t touch him and he goes down. He got a red card. Very important for this team. He has been outstanding Asmir Begovic since he has been at QPR.

“But surely they are going to appeal that and get off it.”

Another win. Another clean sheet.

There was that Southampton defeat last time out, but other than that, from an attacking and defensive standpoint, Daniel Farke’s side have been superb.

After the issues when the 2023 summer transfer window was open, things are starting to change and the points are racking up for the Yorkshire club.

Only two points separate 14th-placed Millwall and sixth-placed Leeds United, but it’s still early days in this gruelling and bat-crazy Championship league.
