What’s next for Tottenham loanee Josh Onomah?

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Josh Onomah has had a mixed season out on loan at Aston Villa.

He is picking up valuable first team experience but has been very inconsistent and was rightly substituted at half-time at the weekend in Villa’s defeat to Fulham.

He has made 11 starts, scoring four goals and providing one assist and while there have been reasons to be encouraged, he has not shown enough to suggest he can be a regular starter at Tottenham next season, or even a valuable contributor off the bench.

Spurs need to find a solution, and another loan looks likely. A return to Villa could be an option if they win promotion but developments at RB Leipzig could present an opportunity.

Former Spurs head of recruitment Paul Mitchell has taken over a similar role at the German club and The Mirror claim he is planning to raid his former club to bring talent over to the club.

A loan deal for Onomah makes sense for all parties.

A Championship loan could see him stagnate, while a Premier League switch could be too much too soon.

Onomah played a key role in the England under-20 World Cup winning team and Tottenham must give him time.

Sending him out to experience a new style of football could be exactly what Onomah needs and present the perfect middle ground.
