Michael Owen says Ibrahima Konate knew he was ‘guilty’ and he should have been sent off during Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Everton on Saturday at Anfield.
In the first half, Ashley Young was shown two yellow cards for daft fouls on Luis Diaz – not even Everton fans or Sean Dyche could complain about that.
But those in Everton colours had every right to shout from the rooftops when Ibrahima Konate was in a similar situation in the second half.
Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen thinks that Jurgen Klopp’s side got ‘lucky’ and both teams should have been level when the game was still goalless, as he told Premier League Productions (21/10/23 at 2:45 pm).
Even Jurgen Klopp knew that his team probably got away with one because he was quick to sub Ibrahima Konate off – ex-Everton midfielder Leon Osman was fuming.
But they were words echoed by Michael Owen, with Mohamed Salah going on to punish the Toffees and securing his team another three points in the Merseyside derby.
Konate gets ‘lucky’ against Everton
“As soon as you give a free kick in that situation, it has to be a yellow card,” said Owen. “I think Liverpool got lucky there.
“It was ‘guilty’ straight away (from Jurgen Klopp after he subbed Konate).”
Clean sheet secured
For only the second game this season, Liverpool secured a clean sheet to provide some much-needed boost and confidence to their backline.
The injury to Andy Robertson over the international break, which looks like it will be long-term, doesn’t help matters.
But Kostas Tsimikas came in and did a very good job, as the rest of the team dealt with any minimal threat that Everton were providing.
Against ten men for large parts of the game, you expect to keep a clean sheet, but on paper, it’s still a confidence booster for all involved at Anfield.
