The former Giallorossi favourite, who moved from the Serie A club to Spurs two seasons ago, could be in line for a return to Italy, according to reports.
Erik Lamela’s time in England could be coming to an end with reports from Italy linking the Argentine with a move back to Serie A side Roma.
The 22-year-old departed the capital club back in the summer of 2013, as Tottenham paid a club-record £30 million to secure the highly-rated attacking midfielder’s services.
But the former River Plate star has struggled for consistency in the Premier League and a series of injuries saw him miss the back-end of last season.
And while his form has noticeably improved for Spurs this term, several media outlets, including the Corriere dello Sport, are now reporting that the player could be in line for a move back to Roma.
No transfer fee has been mentioned by any of the news providers thus far, but the deal could bring the curtain down on a move that promised so much.
Lamela’s form in the Premier League remains stop-start this season, but his efforts in the Europa League have won widespread acclaim, with the youngster scoring twice in four outings for the Lilywhites in the competition thus far.
That tally includes a memorable rabona goal against group stage opponents Asteras Tripolis – arguably one of the best scored in the competition so far this term.
But with Spurs and Lamela yet to confirm or deny any truth to the reports, there is still some hope that the South American will remain at White Hart Lane and help Tottenham claim a much-coveted top-four finish.
Last weekend’s 2-1 victory away at Hull left Spurs in 10th place, but just two points off Manchester United, who currently occupy the fourth and final Champions League qualification space.
