Speaking on the House of Champions Podcast, Fabrizio Romano has been discussing Aston Villa’s managerial situation and Mauricio Pochettino.

The Argentine manager has been tentatively linked with Villa over the past week or so as speculation continues around Steven Gerrard’s future.

The Pochettino rumours have sent Villa fans into overdrive with excitement as one of the best coaches in the world could potentially be headed to Villa.

However, as the old saying goes, if something sounds too good to be true it probably is, and according to Romano, Pochettino is in no rush to take a new job.

Poch willing to wait

Romano shared what he knows about the former Tottenham manager and Aston Villa.

“Let’s see if Aston Villa will be able to convince Pochettino, but what I am told is that Pochettino prefers to wait at least until the World Cup. After the World Cup there will be a lot of managerial changes with important national teams, so this is why Pochettino is waiting. Let’s see if Villa will change his mind, but I don’t think it’s going to be easy because Pochettino is focused on waiting until after the World Cup. As of now, I am told it is difficult,” Romano said.

Better opportunities

With all due respect to Aston Villa, it may not be long before Pochettino gets a chance at a bigger club.

As Romano says, some interesting national team opportunities are likely to come up after the World Cup, while it surely won’t be long before one of Europe’s elite are sacking one of their managers.

Villa, on the other hand, aren’t likely to qualify for European competition anytime soon, and Pochettino is a manager more than worthy of coaching in the Champions League sphere.

This would be an ambitious appointment, but it’s one that probably won’t come off.
