Per Mertesacker had a night to remember at Wembley yesterday – as he scored the winning goal to give Germany a 1-0 win against England.
The defender, who was captaining his nation last night, out-leaped Chris Smalling to guide a header beyond the despairing Joe Hart with what was the games only goal.
Fellow Arsenal players Jack Wilshere and Kieran Gibbs featured for England in the defeat.
It was not exactly a great night in France for Arsenal players – but we doubt they would have cared as Les Bleus pulled off a stunning comeback to qualify for the World Cup at Ukraine’s expense.
Olivier Giroud was dropped to the bench for the game, with Karim Benzema getting the nod up top. And the Real Madrid striker scored the second of France’s three goals.
Meanwhile, Mamadou Sakho, who came in for the suspended Laurent Koscielny was the hero as he scored the opening goal and claims the winner – despite it looking like an own goal from the Ukrainian defender nearest to him,
Arsenal under-21’s are through to the next round of the Under-21 Premier League Cup after beating Norwich City 1-0.
The Canaries however deserved something from the game – and it was only an inspired performance from recent goalkeeping recruit Matt Macey that kept Arsenal in the lead.
They remain unbeaten this season.
Serge Gnabry could go to the World Cup with Germany. The teenage midfielder has had something of a breakout year with The Gunners and that has not gone unnotied by Germany coach Jogi Low:
“The boy is really good. He has exceptional qualities. I’m still open. We have an eye on him.”
