As Marcus Edwards fights for Tottenham chance, Pochettino must do his bit by starting him in EFL Cup

The Tottenham Hotspur youngster reportedly opted to stay at the club rather than head out on loan.

According to the Sun, Tottenham Hotspur youngster Marcus Edwards opted to remain in North London this season rather than heading out on loan in a bid to stake a claim for a first-team spot, and as admirable as that is, his manager Mauricio Pochettino now has to play his part.

The 18-year-old is widely regarded as one of the best prospects to come out of Tottenham’s academy for many years. But no matter how talented he is, Pochettino must give him a chance to shine.

Aside from a 15-minute cameo against Gillingham in the EFL Cup last season, Edwards has got nowhere near competitive first-team action, and his boss has to show faith now the teenager has put his injury problems behind him.

While some Tottenham fringe players have been given chance after chance in the past with little sign of a breakthrough in attitude let alone impact, Edwards has had a watching brief.

The time has come for him to build on that short outing last year, and the EFL Cup could be the ideal chance with Tottenham facing either Barnsley or Derby County later this month.

Edwards deserves to start that match and show what he is capable of. After all, he turned down the chance to play week in, week out lower down the football pyramid in order to keep training with his parent club, yet the only way he can truly prove his worth is if he gets on the field when it really matters.
