Pierre-Michel Lasogga underwhelmed for Leeds United in their latest defeat, but an ex-Whites forward is thriving.
Leeds United’s on loan striker Pierre-Michel Lasogga struggled in Friday night’s Championship loss to Sheffield United.
Lasogga was ineffective up front and reliant on service which did not come, blunted by the Blades defence. It was a long way from the inspired performance he put in against Bristol City a week earlier.
But while Lasogga struggled, a striker released by Leeds in 2016 was starring in Italy.
Mirco Antenucci scored the winner for unfancied SPAL in their Serie A game against Genoa, securing a 1-0 victory.
Antenucci fired SPAL to promotion last season and has continued to lead the line for them in Italy’s top flight.
After a slow start to the season, he has now scored two goals in his last three games and is looking like a very capable player in Italy’s top division.
Leeds never stood a chance of keeping Antenucci once his contract started running down, as he was fed up of the club’s ownership at the time.
But what it does raise, is whether Leeds have actually moved forward on two years ago?
Is Lasogga or any of Leeds’ strikers an improvement on Antenucci, and if not, why was their recruitment in the summer transfer window so poor up front when they knew Chris Wood leaving was a risk.
Leeds’ last two home games have ended in defeat with just one goal scored, and by any measure, that isn’t up to the standard needed from a promotion challenging team.
