With Mike Ashley completing the sale of Newcastle United last week, the English businessman has reportedly set his sights on Derby County.
According to the Mirror, the Sports Direct tycoon is eyeing up a move for the Championship side, who are in dire financial problems. Wayne Rooney’s side went into administration last month.
Despite Ashley’s ownership of Newcastle that led to years of outrage and depression from supporters, this has seemingly not put the former Toon figure off from investing in football.
Moreover, with Derby desperate for cash, the Rams could make for a suitable club for Ashley to take over. Whilst his rule of Newcastle was criticised heavily by supporters, the finances of the Magpies remained consistent and in the black for many years.
Indeed, with Derby in such a crippling position, Ashley could well be the saviour for the historic Championship side. The East Midlands side sit bottom of the table after being docked 12 points for going into administration.
Ashley could do some real good for English football in investing in Derby. Yet on social media, Newcastle fans are already fearing the worst for Rooney’s side should a takeover actually happen.
Newcastle fans already fear the worst with Derby under Ashley

Whilst Ashley could aid Derby financially, the footballing side of the club could still remain poor given the lack of investment Newcastle had for transfers in the 14 years under the English businessman.
Here’s what some Newcastle fans had to say about Ashley potentially taking over Derby on Twitter…
