Tottenham Hotspur were linked with a somewhat bizarre move for the Poland international, but does it now make sense?

Earlier this month, Polish website Sport.pl claimed Tottenham Hotspur had made a move to sign AS Monaco centre-back Kamil Glik this summer, with the North London club allegedly offering the 29-year-old a £3.5million-a-year contract.

From the outset, the claim seemed bizarre, with Tottenham already well stocked when it comes to centre-backs and, if a new one were to arrive, Spurs more likely to buy a younger model such as Alfie Mawson or Ben Gibson.

In short, it seemed like little more than paper-talk at a time when transfer rumours often bear little relation to reality. And so it proved, with Monaco announcing a new deal has been agreed with Glik that will see him remain with the Ligue 1 club until the summer of 2021.

So, was Tottenham’s interest real or, more likely, were they simply used as a means to ensure the Polish international got the best possible deal at his current club?

We will never know for sure, but the timing does seem suspicious. Especially when you consider Tottenham’s usual transfer model and the fact that they are unlikely to be targeting an ageing centre-back when they are in dire need of another quality striker and an effective winger to really take the club forward next season.

Let’s face it, Tottenham never wanted Glik, yet the player has put pen to paper on a new deal at Monaco so everyone goes home happy.

Well, everyone except those Spurs fans desperate to see their club get going this summer…
