Mauricio Pochettino continues to be linked with a move back to Tottenham Hotspur – but it all just feels a little unlikely.

Spurs are still hunting for a new manager after parting ways with Jose Mourinho last month, with Ryan Mason’s stint as interim boss now at an end.

On Sunday, Football.London reported that Spurs have settled on the manager they want, but must now look to strike an expensive deal with their current club.

It’s unclear just who that manager is, but The Sun reported earlier this week that Pochettino wants a return to Tottenham less than two years since being sacked by the club.

Daniel Levy is allegedly considering a move for Pochettino, who is now in charge of Paris Saint-Germain – which would fit with an in-work manager who would require big compensation to land.

Pochettino was revered by Tottenham fans during his time at Tottenham, driving the club forward over more than five years in the job.

It all fell apart a little after the Champions League final in 2019, and Pochettino left just months later, with Spurs unable to kick on since his exit.

Pochettino failed to win the Ligue 1 title with PSG too, so a move has seemed possible, but it just seems incredibly unlikely that Levy would go back to appoint a manager he let go last season.

Now, Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has suggested that many inside Tottenham would love to have Pochettino back having been such a popular figure during his time with Spurs.

However, Gold added that he doesn’t believe Pochettino is actually a candidate for the Spurs job, with a return to North London looking unlikely right now.

“As far as I’m aware, people at Spurs would love Poch back, there’s no getting around it,” said Gold. “He was such a popular figure there, and the way it all ended was a complete mess. Everyone was in a bad place after losing the Champions League final, he was not the Pochettino that started out at Spurs.”

“I don’t believe at this current moment in time that he is a candidate for the job. He is still employed by PSG, and PSG would be mad to make a rash decision to let him go this summer,” he added.
