Newcastle United have been tracking the midfielder since the end of last year, according to reports.

Newcastle’s hopes of signing Sassuolo ace Stefano Sensi appear to be all but over, with Italian media outlet Calcio Mercato claiming that AC Milan, Inter Milan and Barcelona are currently leading the race for the 23-year-old’s signature.

The Chronicle reported back in November last year that Magpies boss Rafa Benitez is a keen admirer of the Italian midfield ace, but at the time, the Toon were unable to match his €25 million (£21.4 million) valuation.

Sensi is an orthodox central midfielder by trade, and he has chalked up one goal and three assists in 21 Serie A appearances for Sassuolo so far this season.

Italian football Daily suggested that the diminutive midfielder is a mix of Italian legends Daniele De Rossi and Claudio Marchisio – high praise indeed.

And he would undoubtedly be a superb addition for Newcastle.

The Tyneside outfit have received a blow, however, with Calcio Mercato claiming that AC Milan, Inter Milan and Barcelona are all keen on signing the two-capped Italy international.

Newcastle will, of course, be able to offer Sensi the chance of regular first-team football, but even so, it will be incredibly hard for them to convince him into moving to St James’ Park, with so many elite teams reportedly now leading the race to sign him.
