Roberto Martinez has told Sky Sports via Football Daily that Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin is ‘as good as’ any other number 9 England currently have at their disposal.

Everton’s goalscoring machine has made an electric start to the new season, which earned him his maiden national call-up and he marked his debut with a goal against Wales.

On Sunday, he was selected from the off once again, as this time he came up against Belgium and a familiar face for those at Goodison in Martinez.

The former Toffees boss shared that he has been ‘following’ Calvert-Lewin’s progress and boldly claimed that he’s ‘as good’ as what Gareth Southgate has in his forward locker.

“Well, as a former Evertonian I have been following Calvert-Lewin’s progress,” Martinez told Sky Sports. “I think he’s as good as any number 9 in that England squad.

“Of course, he’s still a young player compared to the experience of Harry Kane.”

Well, there’s no doubting that Calvert-Lewin is England’s most in-form striker right now given the manner in which he has started the season.

Even though Kane has channelled his inner Kevin de Bruyne at club level, the Spurs man is still the main man up top for his country.

But a certain Calvert-Lewin is providing serious competition to that pecking order, alongside Southampton’s Danny Ings and Chelsea academy product Tammy Abraham.
