The Express are reporting this morning that Arsenal youngster Arthur Okonkwo will replace Runar Alex Runarsson in manager Mikel Arteta’s first-team squad.

What’s the story?

Runarsson is reportedly in talks with Turkish Super Lig side Altay to complete a move in the summer transfer window.

There is speculation that the Iceland international is close to moving to Altay.

It is being reported by multiple media outlets that the 26-year-old is about to leave Arsenal.

The Express are reporting that should Runarsson leave, then Okonkwo is likely to replace him in the Arsenal first-team squad.

The 19-year-old goalkeeper is rated very highly ‘behind the scenes at London Colney’.

Sensible decision?

Runarsson joined Arsenal last summer and could not really make an impact at the North London club.

The Arsenal no.13 played 16 minutes in the Premier League and four times in the Europa League.

It is not a surprise that the Gunners are about to offload him.

It is a sensible decision from Arsenal to promote Okonkwo to the first team and take the place of the 26-year-old.

Bernd Leno is the first-choice goalkeeper at the Gunners, who will have to bring in another player for that position.

Okonkwo will be the third-choice goalkeeper in Arteta’s team.

Arsenal need not spend money on two new goalkeepers in the same transfer window.
