Speaking on the Que Golazo Podcast, Fabrizio Romano has shared an important update on Lucas Torreira’s future at Arsenal.
The Uruguayan was sent out on loan to Atletico Madrid this season, and unfortunately things haven’t quite gone to plan in the Spanish capital as he’s been unable to establish himself as a key player in Diego Simeone’s side.
As you can imagine, this has only led to more speculation about his future, and Romano has now issued an update.
“I think in the summer he will be back at Arsenal. We also had a lot of rumours about Torreira with some Italian clubs like Fiorentina and Inter and some French clubs like Monaco this winter, for the opportunity for him in January to go immediately to these clubs,” Romano said.
“Atletico Madrid said no, they wanted to keep this player, also if Torreira is not playing so much, they’re pushing to win La Liga and they want to do something important in the Champions Leagie, so that’s why Athletico were pushing to keep the player until the end of the season.
“But Arsenal were not so happy basically because the player is not playing, and that’s why at the end of the season, probably Torreira will be back at Arsenal.”
“Arteta will decide with Edu Gaspar if they’re keeping the player and giving him a chance or letting him go again on loan or on a permanent deal, so the situation is open with Torreira, but probably he’s coming back to Arsenal.”

This is certainly interesting to hear.
Arteta and Edu have a big decision to make with Torreira, and they should think long and hard before they act.
The Gunners’ midfield may be in need of a reshuffle this summer, and we’re yet to see Torreira utilised alongside Thomas Partey, so that may be something that is worth experimenting with.
This will certainly be an interesting situation to keep an eye on in the coming months.
