Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has told Football London that he thinks Granit Xhaka has been ‘phenomenal’ in their last five games.

Xhaka was sent off for Arsenal against Burnley after a show of petulance.

At that time the Swiss midfielder took on board a huge amount of criticism, with Arsenal stuck in a rut.

However, his return from suspension has coincided with a huge improvement in Arsenal’s results.

And Arteta says that he has been very pleased with the recent displays that Xhaka has been putting in for his side.

“After the red card with the history he had he was in a difficult place,” he said.

“We had to try to bring him back where we believed he can be and should be, which is being one of the leaders in the team.

“And as you mentioned giving us this stability and presence that he can provide to the team and the club.

“I think since he’s been back he’s been phenomenal, he’s playing really, really well. He’s still a player who can evolve and it’s great for us to have him back.”

Xhaka has been one of Arteta’s most trusted players since his arrival, and looks set to continue playing a key role this season.

Although some pundits and supporters have criticised Xhaka he has remained a key player for the Gunners under numerous different managers, which highlights his worth to the team.

Xhaka will surely start this evening, when Arsenal take on Newcastle United, looking to keep their strong run of form going.
