Darren Ambrose has said on talkSPORT that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta cannot rely on Eddie Nketiah to win the Premier League title this season.

The Tottenham Hotspur-supporting former Newcastle United midfielder believes that Arsenal need to sign a new striker in the January transfer window due to the injury to Gabriel Jesus.

The Brazil international striker suffered an injury at the 2022 Qatar World Cup and will be on the sidelines for at least three months.

Nketiah is now expected to play as the number 9 in place of Jesus, but Ambrose believes that the £100,000-a-week (LondonWorld) striker is not good enough for an Arsenal side aiming to win the Premier League title.

Arsenal are five points clear of second-placed and defending champions Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table at the moment.

Darren Ambrose on Arsenal and Eddie Nketiah

Ambrose said: “I don’t personally think Eddie Nketiah comes in and gives Arsenal what Gabriel Jesus does.

“Potentially I think Mikel Arteta might have to look in the January transfer window, which I’m sure they will.

“You think of last January they didn’t sign anyone and I think that was there undoing towards the back end of the season when Spurs pipped them to the Champions League spot.

“I think they’ll have learned off that and will go big in this transfer window.”

Staying positive

In our opinion, Arsenal fans should keep faith in Eddie Nketiah if manager Mikel Arteta trusts him.

Yes, the 23-year-old is not at the level of Jesus, but the Englishman has not always been given a run of games.

For any player, especially a striker, they need to start a few matches in a row to get into rhythm.

Even if Arsenal decide to sign a new striker in the January transfer window, they are not going to be able to bring him rightaway and Nketiah will get chances.

And he has to take them.
