Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter in disgust after reading that Mikel Arteta’s top transfer priority is a centre-back in the Daily Star.
Paul Brown wrote that the Gunners have decided to turn down the opportunity to sign former Tottenham maestro Christian Eriksen, as Arteta targets a central defender instead.
Understandably, this news has angered, and baffled, a few Arsenal fans.
Why? Well, the Gunners have a plethora of centre-backs at the Emirates. They include Gabriel Magalhães, Rob Holding, David Luiz, Shkodran Mustafi, Calum Chambers, Pablo Mari, William Saliba and Sokratis.
With as many as eight centre-backs available to him, quite why Arteta wants another is a bit of a mystery.
Even more puzzling is the fact that the Spaniard left Sokratis and Saliba – who cost £27 million – out of his Europa League squad this season.
Arteta clearly has too many options, so the Arsenal fans on Twitter are quite fairly annoyed that Pep Guardiola’s former assistant is looking to bolster that department even more.
In truth, the north Londoners need a creative midfielder to fill the void left by Mesut Ozil’s continued absence at the Emirates Stadium.
