Arsenal loanee Matteo Guendouzi didn’t give a great account of himself this afternoon, it must be said.
The Gunners loaned the French midfielder to Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin for the 2020-21 campaign last summer.
And although it’s been a very decent stint in Germany overall, today was an off-day for the Arsenal star.
That’s because Guendouzi and Hertha were thumped 3-0 by Red Bull Leipzig.
The killer goal came on 71 minutes when Nordi Mukiele thumped home a second to spoil the hosts’ chances of a comeback.
But seconds earlier, Guendouzi, a £7 million signing by Arsenal in 2019, got into trouble in his own box and went to ground under virtually no contact, just before Mukiele smashed home from a tight angle.
It looked very much like the former Lorient prospect took a tumble to win a free kick, but it backfired in a major way and here’s how some fans of the Emirates Stadium side reacted to the footage on Twitter:
Guendouzi seems to have incurred the wrath of Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta toward the end of last season, reportedly during the game at Brighton in June when he grabbed Neal Maupay by the throat and goaded him about how he earns more than him.
He’s certainly a talented footballer but his attitude has seen him go backwards in North London and it’ll be fascinating to see whether Arteta has a role for him long term.
